Saliva as an easy-to-collect material is showing promising progress in SARS-CoV-2 Virus RNA collection

Lowering thresholds to participate in testing programs is receiving attention, both in terms of convenience for the general public and in terms of lowering the need for trained collection staff.
ProDiag is proud to announce to have started the delivery of 180.000 saliva collection sets to the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports. These sets will be used especially for painless sampling with children, for which the virus collection with (large) swabs is an even bigger challenge than for adults.
Research groups comparing SARS-CoV-2 detection between patient-matched nasopharyngeal- and saliva samples conclude that saliva samples
- Show less variability in self-sample collection
- Show a greater detection sensitivity and greater consistency throughout the course of infection
- Provide earlier detection of viral RNA at onset of symptoms and is even detectable before onset of fever or respiratory symptoms

We assume saliva will increasingly be used as the collection method of choice as input to rtPCR testing in labs.
