January: HPV awareness month
Did you know that the human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for causing 70% (!) of all cervical cancer cases? Currently, over 200 types have been identified, whereby a distinction can be made between high risk types (e.g. types that could result in cancer) and low risk types (e.g. types that could result in, for example, genital warts). The virus is extremely common and many people will get infected by it at least once in their life.
The WHO has listed some very interesting facts about HPV, follow this link to read more about HPV.
Though HPV vaccination programmes are very common in many countries, a lot of people are still getting infected by the virus. For this reason early diagnosis remains extremely important. Our PCR HPV detection kit can be used for the individual diagnosis of 14 high- and 14 low risk HPV types, enabling a broad diagnosis and a clear answer to the patient.
